Dying Fetus have been one of the most uncompromising acts in brutal death metal since forming in Upper Marlboro, Maryland in 1991, and guitarist and vocalist John Gallagher is the one constant through every lineup shuffle the band has weathered. Their third album Destroy the Opposition landed on Decibel's Top 100 Albums of the 2000s and is widely credited with shaping the deathcore scene that followed. The band mixes pulverising death metal riffs and grinding heaviness with sharp political commentary, taking aim at everything from racial ignorance to the criminal justice system. Over the years they have released nine studio albums and built their reputation through relentless touring, including a full North American run with Gwar and appearances at Milwaukee Metalfest. Key members who departed, including bassist Jason Netherton and drummer Kevin Talley, went on to form Misery Index, which gives you a sense of how much talent has passed through the ranks. Sean Beasley eventually took over on vocals and Duane Timlin joined on drums, and that lineup pushed on with albums like War of Attrition.
