About
Also known as: Ebru Gundes
Few Turkish pop careers have had as dramatic a trajectory as Ebru Gündeş. Her debut album Tanrı Misafiri landed in 1993 and shifted 1.25 million copies, turning her into a household name almost overnight. She followed that momentum with a string of successful records and won the best Turkish Classical Music Artist award at Kral TV three years running in the mid nineties. Then, while recording what would become one of Turkey's all time best selling albums, Dön Ne Olur, she suffered a cerebral haemorrhage in late 1999 and needed two operations before returning to full health. Her blend of arabesk and Turkish pop has kept her relevant across decades, and her 2019 album Âşık topped Apple Music charts in Turkey on its very first day. Beyond music, she built a real television presence as host of the hugely popular Mega Show, as a judge on the Turkish version of The Voice, and as an actress in the comedy series İmkansız Aşk. She is one of those artists who has genuinely threaded herself into the fabric of Turkish popular culture.
