Ed Rush and Optical are a London drum and bass duo who helped define the harder, darker end of the genre. Ed Rush, born Ben Settle, had already been shaping the sound since the early 1990s through his work on No U Turn Records, where he and DJ Trace essentially invented techstep. When he teamed up with Matt Quinn, aka Optical, in the late 1990s, things got serious fast. Their 1998 debut album Wormhole is widely regarded as one of the greatest drum and bass records ever made and introduced what became known as neurofunk to the world. Since then the pair have released a string of albums on their own Virus Recordings label, including The Creeps, The Original Doctor Shade, Chameleon, and Travel the Galaxy, each pushing the sound in new directions. Their 2015 album No Cure is their most recent full length, and that same year they delivered FabricLive.82. Ministry of Sound called them one of the most influential acts in drum and bass, and it is hard to argue: their track Watermelon literally helped DJ Craze win a DMC World Championship.
