Named after a beloved math teacher, Edguy turned a bit of classroom affection into one of Germany's most dependable power metal outfits. Formed in Fulda in 1992, the band built their sound around Tobias Sammet's high, powerful vocals and a knack for layering melody over thunderous riffs. Early rejections from labels didn't slow them down, and it was Vain Glory Opera in 1998, featuring guests from Stratovarius and Blind Guardian, that really put them on the map. Albums like Hellfire Club and Rocket Ride pushed their reach further, blending classic power metal with heavier, harder rock textures. Sammet has kept busy outside the band with Avantasia, his sprawling metal opera project, which has pulled his focus at various points over the years. Edguy's lyrics tend to take on conformity, religion, and the pressures of modern life through metaphor, though they've never shied away from a lighter touch either. Space Police: Defenders of the Crown in 2014 was their most recent studio effort before the band went on hiatus.
