About
Also known as: Egberto Gismondi, Egberto Gismoti
Egberto Gismonti approaches the guitar like no one else. A self taught player, he designed his own instruments with more than six strings so he could treat the fretboard almost like a keyboard, creating the uncanny impression of multiple guitarists playing at once. Alongside his guitar work, he's a classically trained pianist and composer whose studies with Nadia Boulanger in Paris pushed him to weave the collective Brazilian experience into his music. His career spans five decades and some genuinely landmark records. A stay in the Xingu region of the Amazon left a deep mark, feeding albums like Dança das Cabeças with Naná Vasconcelos, which won the 1977 Großer Deutscher Schallplattenpreis and was nominated Album of the Year by Stereo Review. His trio recordings with Charlie Haden and Jan Garbarek for ECM rank among the most celebrated meetings of jazz and Brazilian music. In 1978 he founded his own label, Carmo, giving him full control over a body of work he has described as a musical autobiography.
