About
Also known as: Egschligen
Few ensembles carry a name as fitting as Egschiglen, which translates as Beautiful Melody. Formed in Ulaanbaatar in 1991, this Mongolian folk music group built their sound around traditional instruments like the morin khuur, tobshuur, and joochin, weaving those together with khöömii throat singing and works by contemporary Mongolian composers. The result is something rooted deep in Central Asian tradition but with enough range to surprise. Over a career spanning more than a decade of recordings, Egschiglen took their music to international stages and into some genuinely unexpected territory. Their 2007 album Gereg pushed the boundaries furthest, blending Mongolian musical forms with folk material from the Franconian region of Germany. It earned attention from outlets like the BBC and The Guardian, proof that the group's instinct to reach across traditions landed well beyond their home country.
