About
Also known as: Egyptian Lover
Egyptian Lover built his reputation in the Los Angeles electro scene of the early 1980s, and his weapon of choice was the Roland TR 808 drum machine. As a core member of Uncle Jam's Army, a massive LA party collective that packed out venues like the Sports Arena, he helped define the sound of West Coast electro rap before most people knew what to call it. His 1984 debut album On the Nile gave the world "Egypt, Egypt", one of the defining tracks of the genre, and he founded his own Egyptian Empire Records the same year. He was also the first rap artist signed to Priority Records, with his 1988 album Filthy. His catalog never really went away, but it picked up serious new momentum in the 2010s through Stones Throw reissues and festival runs. The 2016 box set 1983 to 1988 pulled from the original master tapes and came curated by Peanut Butter Wolf. More recently he released 1987 in 2025, keeping the numbered series going. On top of the music, his hand drawn pen and ink artwork on record sleeves caught enough attention to land in a Sotheby's hip hop auction in 2020.
