About
Eivind Aarset started out in heavy metal, with Jimi Hendrix as a formative influence, before discovering jazz and going on to work alongside Ray Charles, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Jan Garbarek, Nils Petter Molvær and Bugge Wesseltoft. The Norwegian guitarist has never stayed in one lane, and his music pulls freely from ambient, post rock, drum and bass and noise. The result is something hard to pin down: atmospheric guitar landscapes built from electronics that gradually shift into rhythmically driven passages, with melodies surfacing at unexpected moments. The 4tet is Aarset on guitar and electronics, Audun Erlien on bass, and two percussionists, Wetle Holte and Erland Dahlen, who both double on electronics. Their album Strange Hands, released on Bugge Wesseltoft's Jazzland label, strips back the ornamentation in favour of directness, while keeping the mysterious, cinematic quality that runs through all of Aarset's work.
