About

Also known as: El Grán Silencio

El Gran Silencio came out of the poor barrios of Monterrey, Mexico, and they have spent their career turning that world into something undeniable. Founded by brothers Tony and Cano Hernandez in 1993, the band blends cumbia, norteño, reggae, hip hop, polka, and vallenato into what they call "freestyle norteño popular," though Tony Hernandez is quick to insist the rebellious spirit of rock holds it all together. Accordion licks and Latin folk rhythms are the glue, and their lyrics lean bohemian rather than flashy, with a lot of affection for street life in Monterrey. Their 1998 debut Libres y Locos made an immediate impression in the rock en español world by pairing rap style delivery with a ranchera attitude. The follow up Chúntaros Radio Poder expanded the palette further, pulling in sounds reminiscent of Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd alongside heavy Latin rhythms, and produced the alternative hit Chúntaro Style. By 2015 they had racked up seven albums, eleven singles, six soundtracks, and seventeen collaborations, including a tribute to Los Tigres del Norte.
