About
Also known as: El Michaels Affair
El Michels Affair is the cinematic soul project led by New York musician and producer Leon Michels, and the group has always operated at an interesting crossroads of hip hop, funk, and analog warmth. After a debut album in 2005 that pulled from library music and afrobeat, they built a devoted following with Enter the 37th Chamber, a full album of Wu Tang Clan covers that started life as a series of vinyl singles after the group performed with Raekwon. That knack for reinterpretation sits alongside a real gift for originals. The 2020s saw them hit a creative stride with Adult Themes and the Turkish pop and prog flavored Yeti Season, which features vocalist Piya Malik. Collaborative work followed with heavyweights like Freddie Gibbs, Madlib, and Black Thought, culminating in the 2023 release Glorious Game. Most recently the group dropped 24 Hr Sports, a record drawing inspiration from 1980s and 90s fashion, Sports Illustrated, and MF Doom, with contributions from Clairo and Norah Jones among others.
