About
Elaine Mitchener is a British Caribbean experimental vocalist, composer, and movement artist whose work consistently blurs the line between sound, body, and history. Her 2017 cross disciplinary piece Sweet Tooth, commissioned by the Bluecoat Arts Centre, the International Slavery Museum, and the Stuart Hall Foundation, tackled the legacy of slavery in the British Empire through the lens of the sugar industry. That commitment to difficult, meaningful subject matter runs through her practice: in 2021 she performed NAMES II at the British Art Show, a roll call of 2,000 enslaved African people owned by an 18th century Jamaican sugar planter. She is a member of the avant garde ensemble Apartment House and the electroacoustic act Rolling Calf, and serves as an associate artist at Wigmore Hall. In 2026 she teamed up with London based composer and DJ Ain Bailey on Maybe It's Because I'm A Londoner, a six and a half minute audio work commissioned by Art on the Underground and installed along the moving walkway at Waterloo tube station. She was appointed MBE in the 2022 Birthday Honours for services to music.
