About
Elena Kats Chernin has a knack for writing music that slips into places you might not expect. Her ragtime piece "Russian Rag" became the long running theme for ABC Radio National's Late Night Live, and her "Eliza Aria" from the ballet Wild Swans ended up soundtracking a Lloyds TSB ad campaign in Britain. That kind of reach is rare for a contemporary classical composer, and it speaks to how accessible her work can feel without being lightweight. Born in Tashkent and based in Australia since 1994, she has written for pretty much every major Australian orchestra, composed silent film soundtracks for ZDF and Arte, and had her music featured at the Sydney Olympics and the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Wild Swans, her ballet collaboration with choreographer Meryl Tankard, remains her signature work. Three of her pieces landed in the ABC Classic 100 countdown in 2025, making her the most represented female composer in that list.
