About
Elia Penrose, who performs under a name she adopted after previously being known as Egle Petrosiute, is a vocalist, arranger and composer who trained at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. Her music sits at the crossroads of jazz and Brazilian song, with her own compositions woven into the mix. She recorded her debut album, Bird's Notes, with Brazilian percussionist Kiko Freitas, and has performed with ensembles as far apart as the Jazz Philharmonic Orchestra of St. Petersburg and the Vilnius Jazz Orchestra, as well as leading her own EGLE Ensemble. The quartet she leads is a strong unit. Pianist Miguel Rodriguez, Spanish born and conservatoire trained in Rotterdam and Amsterdam, is also a composer whose playing carries a distinctly Iberian character. Brazilian bassist Matheus Nicolaiewsky handles both electric and upright bass and is known for his versatility and musicality. Drummer Sander Smeets studied in Tilburg, Rotterdam and New Orleans and is the founder of the Dutch Jazz Collective big band.
