Few producers have built a cult following quite the way Emancipator has, turning lush, string laden downtempo into something that feels genuinely transportive. Douglas Appling started the project in 2006 as a college student, self releasing his debut Soon It Will Be Cold Enough from his dorm room, burning CDs and hand delivering them to the post office. That record caught the ear of Nujabes' Japanese label Hydeout Productions, which gave it a proper re release and helped launch Appling's career abroad. He founded his own imprint, Loci Records, in 2012, and built out the live experience by forming the Emancipator Ensemble, a full band that takes his studio textures to the stage. His 2017 album Baralku drew from Australian indigenous mythology, while the 2020 follow up Mountain of Memory showed he was still finding new emotional territory to explore.
