About
Soprano and alto saxophonist Émile Parisien has built one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary French jazz, drawing on a remarkably wide set of influences that runs from John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter all the way through to Berlioz, Stravinsky and Schoenberg. That classical and expressionist streak gives his music a compositional depth that sets it apart, with improvisation always at the centre. He founded his quartet in 2004 and has been recording for the ACT label since the mid 2010s, releasing a steady string of well regarded albums. His ongoing partnership with accordionist Vincent Peirani has been a particular highlight, producing Belle Époque and later Abrazo. His most recent output includes the sextet album Louise, a duo record with Roberto Negro called Les Métanuits, and the 2024 quartet release Let Them Cook.
