Toronto's Emilie Claire Barlow does things most jazz singers don't: she runs her own label, Empress Music Group, arranges her own material, produces her records, and still finds time to voice cartoon characters on the side. She sings in English, French, and Portuguese, pulling from a tradition she traces back to Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, and Stevie Wonder. Her 2023 album Spark Bird is her most recent studio release, and in 2025 she appeared performing with the Metropole Orkest on 'Midnight Sun', giving her vocal jazz work a lush orchestral setting. Over a career spanning more than two decades, she has racked up seven Juno Award nominations, winning best Jazz Vocal Recording twice: for Seule ce soir in 2013 and Clear Day in 2016. Seule ce soir also took Album of the Year at the ADISQ Awards that same year. She was named Female Vocalist of the Year at the 2008 National Jazz Awards, and her Live in Tokyo record proves she has built a real following well beyond Canada.
