Few rappers have reshaped an entire genre the way Eminem has. After breaking through with The Slim Shady LP in 1999, he dropped The Marshall Mathers LP and The Eminem Show in quick succession, both selling over a million copies in a single week. The Eminem Show went on to become the best selling album worldwide in 2002 and the best selling hip hop album of all time. His 2002 film 8 Mile earned him serious acting credit, and its soundtrack cut 'Lose Yourself' held the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for 12 weeks, longer than any other solo rap song, and won him the first ever Academy Award for Best Original Song given to a hip hop act. His catalog spans more than two decades of number one albums, from Recovery in 2010 to The Death of Slim Shady in 2024, with each release debuting at the top of the Billboard 200. Known for his rapid fire delivery, sharp political commentary, and pitch black humor, he has sold an estimated 220 million records and holds seven diamond certifications from the RIAA. Beyond music, he co founded Shady Records and established the Sirius XM channel Shade 45. Rolling Stone ranks him among the greatest artists and greatest songwriters of all time.
