About
Also known as: Emma Kirby
Few classical singers have done more to shape how we hear early music than Emma Kirkby. The British soprano, born in Camberley, Surrey, built her reputation on a voice deliberately kept free of heavy vibrato, making her sound unusually transparent and well suited to the composers she loves most: Hildegard von Bingen, Monteverdi, Purcell, Handel, Bach and Mozart, among others. She has recorded over a hundred works spanning centuries of repertoire, which is a remarkable breadth even by specialist standards. Kirkby made her British debut in London in 1974, followed by her American debut in 1978, and she has been a defining presence in early music performance ever since. In 2007 she was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire as part of the Queen's Birthday Honours, a recognition of just how central her work has been to the field.
