About
Emmet Cohen sits comfortably at the intersection of jazz history and forward thinking improvisation, blending stride piano, swing, and post bop into something that feels both rooted and alive. The New York based pianist has shared stages with Ron Carter, Joe Lovano, Christian McBride, and George Coleman, and has played everywhere from the Village Vanguard and Birdland to Ronnie Scott's in London and the Cotton Club in Tokyo. His 2021 Mack Avenue debut, Future Stride, drew on the Harlem stride tradition while pushing it into new territory, and critics took notice. His 2022 follow up Uptown in Orbit earned praise for the way Cohen finds inventive angles on old school material, and his trio has been singled out as one of the sharpest working groups in the format. The 2024 album Vibe Provider, dedicated to his late friend Funmi Ononaiye, adds horns to the mix with Bruce Harris, Tivon Pennicott, and Frank Lacy rounding out the sound. Away from the studio, Cohen ran a wildly popular weekly livestream called Live from Emmet's Place, broadcasting sessions from his Harlem apartment.
