About
English Teacher won the 2024 Mercury Prize for their debut album This Could Be Texas, ending a nine year run of London acts taking the award and sparking a wider conversation about regional inequality in the UK music industry. The Leeds four piece, rounded out by vocalist Lily Fontaine, guitarist Lewis Whiting, drummer Douglas Frost, and bassist Nicholas Eden, bring a restless mix of indie rock, art punk and new wave to the table. Their first single R&B set the tone early, with Fontaine reflecting on her experience as a mixed race woman in the predominantly white male world of guitar music. The Line of Best Fit called This Could Be Texas one of the finest debut albums of the decade, praising both the individual musicianship and what they described as a fresh take on the guitar band format. Their song Nearly Daffodils was also named one of Time magazine's ten best songs of 2023.
