Switching from trombone to trumpet after hearing Miles Davis was one of the better decisions in Italian jazz history. Enrico Rava, born in Trieste, built a career that spans bebop, post bop and avant garde jazz, and his list of collaborators reads like a who's who of the music: Cecil Taylor, Pat Metheny, Gil Evans, Joe Lovano, Carla Bley, Michel Petrucciani. His first major work came through Gato Barbieri's Italian quintet in the mid 1960s, followed by a stint with Steve Lacy's group before he relocated to New York City in 1967. Rava has a taste for the unexpected. Albums like Rava L'Opera Va and Carmen reimagine operatic arias and overtures through a jazz lens, while a series of recordings with Paolo Fresu paid tribute to Bix Beiderbecke, Louis Armstrong, Chet Baker and Miles Davis. In 2023 he put together a band of young Italian musicians called The Fearless Five, including trombonist Matteo Paggi, guitarist Francesco Diodati and drummer and singer Evita Polidoro. Their debut album Fearless Five arrived in 2024, featuring fresh takes on some of his best known compositions.
