About
Ensemble La Favorita brings to life a corner of baroque music that most listeners have never encountered: the courtly repertoire of early eighteenth century Vienna, built around the chalumeau, traverso and theorbo. The chalumeau, a warm predecessor to the clarinet, was hugely popular at the Viennese court, particularly when paired with soprano voice and traverso flute. A great deal of music was written for that combination, then largely forgotten, and La Favorita has made it their speciality. Their programmes weave vocal arias together with instrumental works, creating a constantly shifting palette of textures and moods. Founded in 2016 by former students of the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, the ensemble draws its members from several European countries. They focus specifically on Italian and Viennese baroque music for chalumeau, soprano and traverso, performing in an intimate setting that lets the quiet sophistication of this rarely heard repertoire speak for itself.
