Ensemble Musikfabrik has been one of the most serious forces in contemporary classical music since forming in Cologne in 1990. The ensemble runs at a serious pace, giving between 80 and 100 concerts a year across Germany and abroad, with a strong focus on world premieres through their concert series Musikfabrik in WDR, produced in partnership with West German Radio. What sets them apart is the depth of their collaboration with living composers: they don't just perform new works, they commission and co develop them, often working closely with the composers throughout the entire process. Their guest list reads like a who's who of contemporary composition, from Helmut Lachenmann and Karlheinz Stockhausen to Unsuk Chin, Brian Ferneyhough and even the electronic duo Mouse on Mars. Since 2012 they have also taken on the music of Harry Partch, performing it on replica instruments built specifically for the ensemble. Based in Cologne's MediaPark, Musikfabrik regularly folds in electronics, dance, theatre and audience participation to push well past the boundaries of a conventional concert.
