About
Eric Whitacre's debut on Decca, Light & Gold, won a Grammy and hit No. 1 on the classical charts in both the US and UK within a week of release. That's a rare feat for a choral composer. He's best known for lush, shimmering vocal writing, often with unusual score instructions, aleatoric passages and even hand actions or props thrown in. His wind band piece Ghost Train, written at 23, has been recorded more than 40 times. Beyond the concert hall, he co composed the Mermaid Theme with Hans Zimmer for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and later worked with Zimmer again on Batman v Superman. He's written for the London Symphony Orchestra, the King's Singers, the Tallis Scholars and the Los Angeles Master Chorale, where he became artist in residence. Not everyone buys it: one critic called his work a bit like a choral film score, but plenty of listeners find that cinematic glow exactly the point.
