Erik Truffaz is a French Swiss trumpet player who has spent decades bending jazz out of shape in the best possible way, weaving in hip hop, rock, electronic dance music and drum and bass until the result is something hard to pin down but easy to love. His Blue Note output is where a lot of the magic happened: Bending New Corners went Silver in France, and The Dawn, made with his long running core band of Patrick Muller, Marcello Giuliani and Mark Erbetta, set the tone for a run of adventurous records. Miles Davis looms large over his trumpet playing, but Truffaz has never been content to stay in that shadow. His 2007 album Arkhangelsk pulled in pop, French chanson and jazz groove, showing just how wide his net can go. He has also racked up a string of collaborations, ranging from a session with Lebanese band Mashrou' Leila to a joint project with Mexican electronic artist Murcof. In 2023 he put out two records, Rollin' and Clap!, keeping the restless output going well into his sixties.
