About

Also known as: Erkan Ogur

Erkan Oğur is probably best known for doing something no guitarist had done before: in 1976 he removed the frets from a classical guitar and created an entirely new instrument, opening up the microtonal possibilities that Turkish folk melodies actually require. That invention alone would have secured his reputation, but he went on to become a respected master of the kopuz and bağlama lutes as well, blending ancient Anatolian sounds with jazz and classical influences in ways that consistently caught other musicians off guard. His discography spans solo records, film scores and a string of collaborations that range from playing blues with Robert 'One Man' Johnson in the US to recording with Armenian duduk legend Djivan Gasparyan on the album Fuad. His soundtrack for the 2004 film Yazı Tura picked up awards at both the Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival and the Ankara International Film Festival. He also performs as part of the Telvin trio alongside İlkin Deniz and Turgut Alp Bekoglu, taking Turkish folk music into improvised jazz territory.
