Appointed Master of the King's Music in 2024 by King Charles III, Errollyn Wallen holds a title that puts her in a lineage stretching back centuries, and she is the first Black person ever to do so. That appointment capped a career full of firsts: back in 1998, her percussion concerto made her the first Black female composer to have a work performed at the BBC Proms, a piece originally written for percussionist Colin Currie and premiered at the BBC Young Musician finals in 1994. Wallen's music refuses to stay in one lane, pulling from avant garde classical traditions and popular songwriting in equal measure. She has written operas, choral symphonies, chamber works and multimedia song cycles, and her "Principia", a piece with lyrics about science, featured in the London 2012 Paralympics Opening Ceremony. One of her more unusual credits: co writing a song with astronaut Steve MacLean while he was aboard a space shuttle in 2006. She also holds the distinction of being the first woman to receive an Ivor Novello Award for classical music.
