Named after a Danish fairytale, Esben and the Witch are a three piece from Brighton whose sound sits somewhere between gothic post punk, shoegaze, and something they once called 'nightmare pop'. Rachel Davies handles vocals and bass, Thomas Fisher plays guitar, and Daniel Copeman holds down drums and electronics. Their debut album Violet Cries landed in early 2011, shortlisted in the BBC Sound of 2011 poll, and earned comparisons to Siouxsie Sioux and PJ Harvey alongside an NME score of 8 out of 10. Their second album Wash the Sins Not Only the Face leaned on literature for its lyrics, drawing from Nabokov and Robert Frost, and was recorded live in the studio in a cottage in East Sussex. After releasing albums through Matador Records and then their own Nostromo Records, the band signed to French metal label Season of Mist in 2016. Their discography now runs to six albums, with Hold Sacred arriving in 2023.
