Esmay Usmany is a performer who works at the intersection of music and theatre, weaving together song, live playing and personal storytelling into a single piece. Her music theatre production Voorwaarts centres on questions of identity and belonging, drawing on the experience of having roots in multiple places at once. The show moves through grief, humour and hope, exploring what happens to a sense of home when memories are scattered across different countries and cultures, and how family patterns can feel like both an anchor and a constraint. Voorwaarts speaks to anyone who has ever moved, been left behind or simply wanted to move forward. Usmany brings a deeply personal lens to the material, reflecting on colonial history, diaspora and the way inherited stories shape who we become.
