About
Espen Berg is a Norwegian jazz pianist and composer from Trondheim whose solo debut Noctilucent landed on All About Jazz's list of the ten best releases of 2012, a pretty serious stamp of approval for a first outing. He works across a lot of different formats: leading his own trio, collaborating with saxophonist Marius Neset and the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, and writing commissioned pieces for classical ensembles like the Trondheim Soloists and Cikada String Quartet. His trio, featuring bassist Bárður Reinert Poulsen and drummer Simon Olderskog Albertsen, was named NTNU Ambassador at the Trondheim Jazz Festival in 2016. Before all that, he picked up the best soloist prize at the Hoeilaart International Jazz Competition in Belgium in 2007 and made the final eight at the Montreux Jazz Festival Solo Piano Competition in 2013.
