About
Essie Jain's debut, We Made This Ourselves, had critics reaching for Sandy Denny and Vashti Bunyan. The New York Times described how she builds stark miniatures out of a few light guitar strums and a haunting alto, with her voice multitracked into precise harmonies that can sound warm or ghostly. It came out on Ba Da Bing in the US and later on The Leaf Label for the rest of the world. Before that, she'd appeared on the Kill Rock Stars compilation The Sound the Hare Heard, alongside Sufjan Stevens and Colin Meloy. Her path since has been far from standard singer songwriter fare. She made an album of original lullabies for parent and child on her own label, then recorded All Became Golden live with an orchestra alongside composer Nico Muhly. Meditation and channeling shaped later work like To Love, a set of modern chants, and As I Return, songs meant as companions to therapeutic healing. In 2025 she returned to folk songs with her husband Patrick Glynn on The Rose In Bloom.
