Founded in Chicago in 1973 by percussionist Kahil El'Zabar, the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble has spent five decades carving out a distinctive space in American jazz, blending spiritual energy with serious rhythmic muscle. The rotating cast of collaborators has been impressive: Joseph Bowie of Defunkt, post bop saxophonist Ernest Dawkins, Edward Wilkerson of 8 Bold Souls, and multi instrumentalist Light Henry Huff have all passed through the group at various points. With over 15 albums to their name, EHE has shown remarkable staying power. Their 2023 release, Spirit Gatherer: Tribute to Don Cherry, keeps that tradition alive, while earlier records like Freedom Jazz Dance and Be Known: Ancient/Future/Music show just how wide their vision has always been.
