Few disco debuts hit as hard as Evelyn "Champagne" King's 1977 single "Shame", which she recorded after being overheard singing in a washroom at Philadelphia International Records. That gold certified track peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and later became one of the first records inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame. The "Champagne" nickname came early, added because plain Evelyn King sounded too mature for the teenager she was at the time. She kept the momentum going well into the 1980s. "I'm in Love" hit No. 1 on both the R&B and dance charts in 1981, and "Love Come Down" from the 1982 album Get Loose topped the soul and dance charts while cracking the UK top ten. After a health scare in 2006, she returned with the studio album Open Book in 2007, and later teamed up with Martha Wash and Linda Clifford to form the supergroup First Ladies of Disco, releasing their debut single "Show Some Love" in 2015.
