About
Ex Libris went and turned the stories of three women called Ann into a metal trilogy. Their 2019 project Ann splits into three chapters, one each for Anne Boleyn, Anastasia Romanova and Anne Frank, women from different times and places who shared the same fate. It is the kind of concept that fits a Dutch symphonic and progressive metal band led by operatic soprano Dianne van Giersbergen. The band started out in 2003 under the name Erinyen and became Ex Libris in 2004. Their debut album Amygdala came out in 2008, followed by Medea in 2014, a concept album built around the Greek tragedy of Medea and Jason. Fans helped pay for it through an IndieGogo campaign that cleared its €2,000 goal with €3,549 to spare, and the band released it independently. Along the way they shared stages with Epica, Stream of Passion, ReVamp and Delain, and van Giersbergen also took on the frontwoman role in Xandria without leaving Ex Libris.
