About
Also known as: Breaker Morant, EITS, Explosion In The Sky
Explosions in the Sky describe their instrumentals as "cathartic mini symphonies", and listening to them, it's hard to argue. The Austin quartet built their reputation on elaborately layered guitar work, moody crescendos, and an emotional live presence that won over audiences well outside the post rock world. Their third album, The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place, is widely considered their defining record, guitarist Munaf Rayani describing it as the band's attempt at love songs. They also wrote the soundtrack for the 2004 film Friday Night Lights, sticking to their signature style even with rare studio equipment on offer. One of their more notorious moments came with their second album, whose artwork featured a plane and the words "This plane will crash tomorrow", leading to wild speculation after September 11 and even getting bassist Michael James detained at an airport. They've since grown into a band with eight studio albums, a Fugazi support slot, and tours stretching to over 140 shows. Their most recent album, End, arrived in September 2023.
