Ezhel, born Sercan İpekçioğlu in Ankara, has carved out a lane all his own in Turkish music by blending trap and hip hop with reggae and Kurdish themes, a combination you genuinely don't hear anywhere else. His song AYA racked up over 80 million streams on Spotify, and in 2019 The New York Times put him on their list of European pop acts everyone should know. He plays bağlama and guitar on top of rapping, and his lyrics weave in Kurmanji Kurdish alongside Turkish, reflecting a cultural identity he's never been shy about. His debut album Müptezhel dropped in 2017, and he's since collaborated with artists like Ufo361 and Murda. His outspokenness has come at a cost though: he was arrested in 2018 on charges of inciting drug use through his music, only to be acquitted in under ten minutes at his first hearing. Since 2019 he has been living in Berlin, citing fears of arrest if he were to return to Turkey. His most recent studio album, Derdo, came out in 2024.
