About
Also known as: Fairouz, Fairuz, Fayrouz, Feyruz
Few voices in the Arab world carry the weight that Fairuz does. The Lebanese singer has recorded nearly 1500 songs and sold over 150 million records across a career spanning more than six decades, making her one of the best selling music artists on the planet. Her sound is something distinct: a fusion of Western and Arab musical traditions, melancholic and nostalgic in mood, with a voice experts consistently describe as airy, clear and flexible. Where most Arabic singing leans into heavy ornamentation, Fairuz carved out something almost prayer like. She broke through in 1952 with "Itab" and quickly became a fixture at the Baalbeck International Festival, where early small skits with the Rahbani brothers eventually grew into full musical operettas. Her reach spread across Arab capitals and on to stages like Carnegie Hall, the Olympia in Paris and the Royal Festival Hall in London. Over 80 albums, 20 musicals and a string of nicknames including "The Voice of Lebanon" and "Our Ambassador to the Stars" tell you something about the scale of the devotion she inspires.
