About
Also known as: Fanfare Ciocarla, Fanfare Ciocarlia
Fanfare Ciocărlia is a twelve piece Romani brass band from Zece Prăjini, a small village in northeastern Romania where playing an instrument has always been a family tradition rather than a professional pursuit. What sets them apart is sheer speed and intensity: complex rhythms, blistering staccato solos on clarinet, saxophone, and trumpet, all delivered with an energy that pulls in rock fans and world music lovers alike. Their debut album Radio Pașcani landed in 1998 on Berlin label Piranha Musik and sold over 150,000 copies, making it one of the label's biggest sellers ever. Their repertoire ranges from traditional Romanian and Romani folk pieces to wildly convincing takes on "Born to Be Wild", the James Bond theme, and Duke Ellington's "Caravan". They performed at the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo and contributed to the Borat Subsequent Moviefilm soundtrack. Their version of "Moliendo Café" became the theme for the 2024 animated series Creature Commandos, proof that their reach keeps growing in unexpected directions.
