Folk / Country

Folk and country music are closely related, so people often mix them up, but they’ve each got their own vibe. Folk music is really the oldest of the two and is basically “music of the people.” It’s been around for centuries and was traditionally passed down by ear, not written down, which means songs could change over time depending on who was singing them. It’s usually simple, acoustic, and very focused on storytelling, with instruments like guitars, banjos, and fiddles. Folk songs often talk about everyday life, history, or even social issues, so it feels very real and connected to a specific culture or community.

Country music actually grew out of folk, especially in the Southern United States in the early 1900s. While it still keeps that storytelling style, it became more polished and commercial over time, adding things like electric guitars, drums, and a more “radio friendly” sound. Country songs usually focus on themes like love, heartbreak, and rural life, and they often have that recognizable twang in the vocals. So in a way, you can think of country as a modern evolution of folk that’s adapted to a bigger audience.

There are some cool things that make folk and country interesting together. Folk music doesn’t really have one clear origin because it developed across cultures all over the world, and some songs have been around for hundreds of years. It also played a big role in social movements, especially during the 1960s, where it was used to spread messages about civil rights and change. Meanwhile, country music took those roots and built a whole industry around them, with places like Nashville becoming huge music hubs. So even though they share the same roots, folk feels more raw and traditional, while country is like its more modern, mainstream cousin.
