About
Faun have spent over two decades building a sound that's genuinely hard to pin down: pagan folk rooted in medieval traditions, but laced with darkwave electronics, ancient Perso Arab melodies, and lyrics drawn from the Poetic Edda, the Carmina Burana, and even John Keats. Formed in Bavaria in 1998, the band plays instruments you rarely see on the same stage, including Swedish nyckelharpa, hurdy gurdy, Celtic harp, cittern, and bagpipes, while vocals shift between German, Latin, Old Norse, Hungarian, and several other languages. The result is what founding member Niel Mitra calls "musical alchemy", and it works. Their seventh studio album Von den Elben was a turning point, landing in the top ten in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland and earning an ECHO nomination. Midgard followed and shot to number three on the German charts. In 2021 they set up their own imprint, Pagan Folk Records, releasing the album Pagan in 2022 on their own terms. Their collaboration with Lindy Fay Hella of Wardruna on the track Galdra shows the kind of company they keep in the Nordic and pagan folk world.
