Few punk bands have caused as much chaos on national television as Fear. The Los Angeles outfit fronted by Lee Ving became notorious after their 1981 Halloween slot on Saturday Night Live, a set that ended with $20,000 worth of damage, ripe pumpkin smeared across the set, and slamdancers including John Belushi and Ian MacKaye of Minor Threat tearing up the studio. The appearance was essentially a consolation prize after film producers bumped them from John Belushi's final movie. Fear's 1982 debut The Record is a cornerstone of Californian hardcore punk, and their classic lineup of Ving, guitarist Philo Cramer, bassist Derf Scratch, and drummer Spit Stix helped define that raw, confrontational West Coast sound. Even Flea passed through on bass before finding his way to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Cramer and Stix eventually came back into the fold in 2018, giving the band something close to its original shape again.
