About
Also known as: Flight of the Concords
Flight of the Conchords turned a flat share at Victoria University of Wellington into one of the most beloved musical comedy acts around. Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement started out playing live around Wellington, then moved on to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where they picked up a Perrier Award nomination in 2003. A BBC Radio 2 series followed, and that became the blueprint for their HBO sitcom, in which they play a fictional version of themselves, two Kiwis trying to make it as a band in New York. The songs are woven right into the plot of each episode. The music was strong enough to stand on its own. Their EP The Distant Future won the Grammy for Best Comedy Album, and they signed to Sub Pop for a self titled debut, with I Told You I Was Freaky arriving after the second season. Their 2018 HBO special Live in London doubled as their fifth album, and their shows still mix songs with skits and chatting to the crowd.
