About
Florian Weber is a German pianist and composer whose trio Minsarah, formed in 2002 with bassist Jeff Denson and drummer Ziv Ravitz, picked up the German Record Critics' Prize for its 2006 debut. The name is Hebrew for prism, which suits a band that keeps bending modern jazz into different shapes. A few years later saxophonist Lee Konitz joined, turning the trio into a quartet that toured mostly in the United States, made the album Deep Lee for Enja Records, and was captured live at the Village Vanguard. Weber kept branching out. In 2011 he started Biosphere with Lionel Loueke, Thomas Morgan and Dan Weiss, and later made records for ECM, including the duet album Alba with trumpeter Markus Stockhausen and the quartet set Lucent Waters. He won an Echo Music Prize for best instrumentalist in 2013 and the WDR Jazz Prize for improvisation the following year.
