About

The Folkwang Kammerorchester Essen started life in 1958 as a training ground, a place where students from the Folkwang University and other music colleges in North Rhine Westphalia could get ready for a seat in a proper orchestra. It worked: more than 500 of its musicians have since landed jobs in opera and symphony orchestras in Germany and abroad. These days it runs more like a professional outfit, with a core of permanent members from around the world who are auditioned and trialled, then offered contracts up to the age of 35. This is the only orchestra that plays regularly at the historic Villa Hügel, and it has a habit of giving young soloists a stage. Christoph Eschenbach, Sabine Meyer, Vadim Repin and Christian Tetzlaff all appeared with it early in their careers. The ensemble has played festivals like the Rheingau Musik Festival and the Schleswig Holstein Musik Festival, toured as far as Algeria in 2010, and works closely with the Essener Bachchor. Johannes Klumpp has been chief conductor since 2013.
