David Balfe's project For Those I Love grew out of grief. His 2021 debut album, a reissue of a 2019 Bandcamp release, was built around the death of his friend Paul Curran, a spoken word musician who died by suicide. The record won the 2021 Choice Music Prize and put Balfe firmly on the map as one of the most emotionally direct voices to come out of Dublin in years. His second album, Carving The Stone, arrived in 2025 on September Recordings and shifts the lens outward rather than inward, looking at life in Dublin during the fallout of the Celtic Tiger era and the years of the Great Recession. Before going solo, Balfe played in the Blind and Mothers & Fathers, a project he shared with Pamela Connolly of Pillow Queens. A new track, Of The Sorrows, surfaced in May 2025, suggesting he is staying active alongside the album.
