Frank Gambale is the Australian jazz fusion guitarist who turned sweep picking and economy picking into an art form, borrowing ideas from piano and saxophone to push past what the guitar can normally do. He spent six years with the Chick Corea Elektric Band starting in 1987, recording five albums and earning two Grammy nominations alongside Eric Marienthal, John Patitucci, and Dave Weckl. Jerry Garcia called him his personal favourite in a 1991 Rolling Stone interview, which says a lot. He later put in twelve years with Steve Smith's Vital Information, reunited with the Elektric Band in 2002, and joined Return to Forever IV in 2011 with Stanley Clarke, Jean Luc Ponty, and Lenny White. He also invented his own guitar tuning, aptly called Gambale Tuning, which rearranges string pitches to let him voice chords closer to how a pianist would play them.
