About
Also known as: Franz Liszt Academy Chamber Orchestra, Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra, Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra Budapest, Franz Liszt Kammerorchester, Franz Lizst Chamber Orchestra, Liszt Ferenc Academy Chamber Orchestra, Orchestre de Chambre Ferenc Liszt, フランツ・リスト室内管弦楽団
Founded in Budapest in 1963, the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra has spent over six decades carving out a reputation as one of Hungary's most respected ensembles. Named in honour of the great Hungarian composer, the orchestra draws its identity from the deep tradition of Hungarian musical life while consistently reaching beyond it. Built around 17 string players, with harpsichord and winds added as the programme demands, the group covers an impressive sweep from Baroque masters like Claudio Monteverdi all the way through to contemporary work. The ensemble has shared the stage with some genuinely towering figures, including Martha Argerich, Mstislav Rostropovich, Yehudi Menuhin, and Isaac Stern. They play around 30 to 35 concerts a year in Hungary and tour regularly across Europe, the United States, and Japan. For most of its history the orchestra was guided by conductor and violinist János Rolla, who led them from 1979 until his death in 2023, following the founding conductor Frigyes Sándor.
