Fred Hersch has spent decades quietly redefining what jazz piano can do, and his record speaks for itself: 17 Grammy nominations, a Guggenheim Fellowship for composition, and the distinction of being the first pianist to play weeklong solo engagements at the Village Vanguard. That Village Vanguard run produced some of his most celebrated recordings, including the widely praised Alone at the Vanguard and Alive at the Vanguard. His playing sits comfortably in post bop and modern creative territory, drawing on both jazz tradition and classical sensibility. Hersch has written more than 75 original compositions, several of which are published by Edition Peters, and his large scale Leaves of Grass set Walt Whitman's poetry for two voices and an instrumental octet, performed at Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall. Beyond his own projects, he has worked alongside an extraordinary range of musicians spanning jazz, classical, and Broadway, from Stan Getz and Charlie Haden to Renée Fleming and Audra McDonald.
