About
Also known as: The Fruit Bats
Fruit Bats is the long running project of Chicago songwriter Eric D. Johnson, and it has quietly accumulated one of the most beloved catalogs in indie folk. The song 'When U Love Somebody' from the 2003 album Mouthfuls became a genuine word of mouth classic, covered by The Decemberists and Guster among others, and later appeared in the film Youth in Revolt. Johnson spent a stretch touring as a member of The Shins, which he credits as a turning point for his creative ambitions, and when he brought Fruit Bats back from a self declared retirement in 2015, the comeback stuck. The 2016 album Absolute Loser really broke things open, with 'Humbug Mountain Song' racking up over 59 million Spotify streams and a music video in which Johnson wrestles a bear as a frontier cosplay. He has also kept busy outside Fruit Bats, co founding the folk group Bonny Light Horseman alongside Josh Kaufman and Anais Mitchell, whose debut scored two Grammy nominations. Fruit Bats are now on Merge Records, a label that suits their unhurried, warm brand of indie folk perfectly.
