The name is a riff on funghi porcini, those earthy Italian mushrooms, which tells you something about the sense of humour James Braddell brings to his music. Recording as Funki Porcini, the London born producer spent a decade making music for film and television in Italy before signing to Ninja Tune in 1994 and setting up his own studio, The Uterus Goldmine. His sound sits in the overlap between downtempo, trip hop, acid jazz and electronica, and his debut Hed Phone Sex arrived in 1995. Beyond his solo work, Braddell has been part of 9 Lazy 9 under the alias Giacomo Braddellini, and briefly fronted a band called Purr alongside Stuart Warren Hill of Hexstatic. What stands out about his output is the sheer consistency of it: he has kept releasing records at a steady pace across three decades, with titles like Fast Asleep, Conservative Apocalypse and Boredom Never Looked So Good suggesting someone who has never lost that dry wit. Modern Hymns for Modern Things came out in 2025.
